The best start for the Balkan Bridge of Culture 24 October 2023

The recent concert by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra (TSSO) impressively closed the 58th Dimitria Festival and marked the beginning of a broader collaboration between the TSSO and the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. This partnership, under the program "Thessaloniki-Sofia: Balkan Bridge of Culture," aims to open a channel of communication between the artists and audiences of the two orchestras, allowing them to experience the talent, inspiration, and creativity from across the borders through high-level concerts in both countries, and to bring the two peoples closer through culture.
The concert was introduced by TSSO Director Simos Papanas and Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Culture Victor Stoyanov. In the first part, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by its Director Nayden Todorov, performed the "Festive Overture" by Bulgarian composer Veselin Stoyanov, epitomizing modern Bulgarian orchestral writing, followed by Ravel's highly demanding "La Valse."
In the second part, the two orchestras joined forces on stage to perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," orchestrated by Ravel, highlighting the virtuosity of the symphonic orchestra musicians.
The audience warmly responded to this collaboration, and the two orchestras have scheduled their next meeting for December 17 in Sofia, where the TSSO will perform Beethoven's iconic "Ninth Symphony" at the impressive Bulgaria Hall, in a concert dedicated to the great composer's birthday.
