Notice of competitions for filling six (6) vacant posts of permanent artistic staff in the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra

The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports has announced competitions for filling six (6) vacant posts for permanent artistic staff in the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, as follows:

1 Principal in Bassoons
1 Sub-principal in Clarinets under the obligation to play the clarinet piccolo
2 musicians (tutti) in First Violins
1 musician (tutti) in Double Basses
1 musician (tutti) in Horns


Candidates must meet the following requirements:
1. Nationality requirement
a) They must be Greek citizens or
b) They must be citizens of EU Member States or
c) They must be Northern Epirots or Cypriots of Greek descent or foreigners of Greek descent from Istanbul or Imvros or Tenedos, without requiring a certificate of Greek nationality, provided that their capacity as Greeks by birth and conscience can be demonstrated in other ways (Legislative Decree 3832/1958, Government Gazette 128/A/1958).
d) All persons who acquired Greek nationality by naturalisation may also be candidates provided at least 1 year has elapsed from acquisition of nationality by the last date for submitting applications.
2. They must have turned 21 years old or, in the case of musicians of recognised talent, 15 years old.
3. Their state of health and physical condition must be that required to perform the duties associated with their post, within the meaning of the provisions of Article 7 - Article I of Law 3528/2007, as in force.
4. They must not be impeded from taking up the post due to criminal convictions or custody or any form of privative or concurrent judicial assistance (Article 8 - Article I of Law 3528/2007).
5. They must hold a degree or diploma in the relevant areas of expertise (musical instrument) from a recognised music training establishment in Greece or an equivalent diploma from a training establishment abroad.

The competitions will be held in Thessaloniki from October 22nd. The place and the excact programme will be announced by the T.S.S.O.

The candidates along with the application form must also submit a CV and any other information which would help form a picture of their artistic personality and abilities.
More specifically, candidates claiming the status of musicians of recognised talent must submit evidence to justify that claim if they tick the relevant box on the application form.
The Examinations Committee shall make a determination on this matter in accordance with law. After inspecting the supporting documents from each candidate in this case (musicians of recognised talent) the Committee shall ascertain the existence of evidence of that recognised musical talent and allow that candidate to participate in the competition.
Failure to submit those supporting documents along with the application form for the competition shall render any subsequent reliance on such status inadmissible.

According to the Minister of Culture decision ΥΠΠΟ/ΚΑΤΕΧΝ/Δ/35836/22-7-1999, the examinations syllabus per family of instruments and category of artistic personnel is as follows:

b. MOZART: Concerto KV 191 the 1st part with Cadenza

a. WEBER: Concerto No.2, op.74 in E flat major, the 1st and the 2nd part
b. MOZART: Concerto in A major, KV 622, the 1st part with Cadenza (playing with Clarinetto basso)

VIOLINS
Musicians (tutti)
a. One of the following concertos WIENIAVVSKY No2, MENDELSSOHN, BRUCH, the 1st part with Cadenza.
b. ΜΟΖΑRT: One of the concertos Νο.3 (in G), Νο.4 (in D), Νο.5 (in A), the 1st part with Cadenza.
c. Excerpts from orchestral works (without the Soli).

In case of applications submitted for 2 posts, examinations for the second post shall only relate to the aspects where the exam syllabi for the two posts do no overlap.

Candidates shall be examined in front of the Examinations Committee without a public audience. Only musicians from the Orchestra who play the instrument being examined are permitted to attend in accordance with the provisions of Article 1(7) of the Minister Decision No. ΥΠΠΟ/ΚΑΤΕΧΝ/Δ/35836/22-7-1999.

The lists of successful candidates, by category and instrument, shall include a number of successful candidates equal to the number of posts announced and shall be posted at the Orchestra’s offices and notice board area in the presence of 2 employees and the relevant reports shall be prepared which shall then be sent to the Directorate for HR Management & Development of the Ministry of Culture & Sport.
Successful candidates will be invited to submit all supporting documents required by law requested in a letter from the Directorate for HR Management & Development of the Ministry of Culture & Sport.
All information about the competitions and all relevant issues shall be laid down in decisions and announcements of the Examinations Committees which will be posted at the Orchestra’s offices (73, Nikis Avenue, Thessaloniki) and will also be posted on the TSSO’s website.
This decision – notice shall be published in the Government Gazette, in the newspaper Dimosiografika and posted to the website of the Ministry of Culture & Sport (www.yppo.gr) under Staff Selection notices, of the TSSO (www.tsso.gr) and the Transparency Programme (www.et.diavgeia.gov.gr) and a summary of this notice shall be published in two daily newspapers, one in Athens and one in Thessaloniki.
