Born in Thessaloniki in 1981, Athanasios Sourgounis completed his training in violin at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He also studied Higher Music Theory and the piano.
As a violinist, he attended Master classes with great teachers as Leonidas Kavakos, Stelios Kafantaris, Ariadne Daskalakis and Rudolph Koelman. He was a member of the World Youth Orchestra for two years, touring throughout Europe.
During his violin activities, he occasionally helped out in quartet playing by taking the viola part, and noticed that the lower tone simply suited him better physically. He also loved its sound and playing in the “middle” of a quartet or orchestra. So he decided to switch over, managed in sort period to become a permanent member of violas in the State Symphony Orchestra of Thessaloniki, having also Co-Principal Viola duties. He frequently performs with Ensemble Modern Frankfurt. As a soloist, has performed with Thessaloniki and Athens State Symphony Orchestras.
Athanasios has recorded for the National Radio with several Chamber Music Ensembles and at the moment he studies Orchestral Conducting in the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.
